Panic has gripped the northern Indian town of Meerut where a leopard is on the loose, officials said. Schools and colleges are shut and a high alert has been sounded in the town, which is a two-hour drive from the capital, Delhi. The animal entered a hospital on Sunday and was locked in a room for a few hours before it escaped, reports said. Large numbers of policemen have been deployed and wildlife experts have been called in to help capture the animal. "We have closed schools and colleges in the town because we are unable to locate the leopard and do not want to take any chances. This is only a precautionary measure," district magistrate Pankaj Yadav told BBC Hindi. "We are yet to locate the leopard. We have got calls from some areas but are still unable to trace its exact location," district forest officer Sushant Kumar said. ‘Zonkeys’ exist, and they’re amazing

A zoo in Mexico has welcomed into the world a ‘zonkey’: a rare cross between a zebra and a donkey. Named Khumba, the hybrid animal seen in the video was born on April 21 at Reynosa zoo, in the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas. Khumba’s mother is a zebra called Rayas, whilst the father is a dwarf, blue-eyed albino donkey named Ignacio that lives on a nearby farm. According to the zoo, Khumba is a rare case in the animal world because the zebra and donkey chromosomes are not compatible.

27 dead, 109 injured in 'terror' attack at Chinese train station

BEIJING (AP) — A group of knife-wielding assailants assaulted people at a train station in southwestern China on Saturday in what authorities described as a "terrorist attack" in which at least 27 people were killed and 109 others injured, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. Xinhua did not identify who might have been responsible for the attack that city police said began around 9 p.m. at the Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan province. But the news agency said authorities considered it to be "an organized, premeditated violent terrorist attack." China's top police official, Politburo member Meng Jianzhu, was en route to Kunming, the Communist Party-run People's Daily reported, an indication of how seriously authorities view what is one of the deadliest attacks in China in recent years.
