Dolphins kill two porpoises in game of 'cat and mouse'

Image
Young male dolphins used two porpoises in a game of cat and mouse, inflicting horrific injuries that left the animals dead The moment two porpoises were attacked and killed by dolphins who threw the animals around ‘for fun’ has been captured on camera. The incident was seen by Caroline Weir who noticed the commotion from her bedroom window in St Cyrus in Aberdeenshire and took photographs. The pictures show the dolphins repeatedly throwing around one of the porpoises. The animals were later washed up on the shore dead, and had suffered serious injuries to their heads including deep gaping holes around their eyes.  Experts at the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme believe the pair of dolphins, thought to be young males, were probably playing a game similar to ‘cat and mouse’ when they inflicted the injuries. Australia: Snake eats crocodile after battle

Image
A snake has won a lengthy battle with a crocodile in northern Queensland, wrestling it, constricting it and then finally eating it. The incident at Lake Moondarra, near Mount Isa, was captured on camera by local residents on Sunday. The 10-ft snake, thought to be a python, coiled itself around the crocodile and the two struggled in the water. The snake later brought the dead crocodile onto land and ate it. Tiffany Corlis, a local author, saw the fight and took these pictures, which have been widely used in the Australian media. "It was amazing," she told the BBC. "We saw the snake fighting with the crocodile - it would roll the crocodile around to get a better grip, and coil its body around the crocodile's legs to hold it tight." "The fight began in the water - the crocodile was trying to hold its head out of the water at one time, and the snake was constricting it." "After the crocodile had died, the snake u

Pompeii temple damaged by heavy rains

Image
The Temple of Venus and walls of a tomb and shop in the long-neglected ruins of Pompeii near Naples have been damaged, possibly due to heavy rain, officials said. Custodians found that a two-metre wall of an ancient shop in the ruined city - which had recently been restored - had collapsed under the weight of another wall that crumbled onto it. It followed the discovery yesterday that parts of an archway in the temple had fallen off and a wall in the necropolis - the biggest in the ancient Roman city - had tumbled down. The areas affected have been closed the public. Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini has called a meeting this week to assess the damage and progress made in an EU-backed project to restore the archaeological site. "The news of these collapses comes at a time in which there is an unprecedented vacuum in the management of Pompeii," said Antonio Irlando from the Cultural Heritage Observatory, a non-governmental group that follows work on

But the news agency said authorities considered it to be "an organized, premeditated violent terrorist attack." China's top police official, Politburo member Meng Jianzhu, was en route to Kunming, the Communist Party-run People's Daily reported, an indication of how seriously authorities view what is one of the deadliest attacks in China in recent years. It was not immediately clear how many people were killed by the assailants. Local television station K6 said that several of the attackers were shot by
